‘Latest research on intestinal permeability, connective tissue and hyperlaxity aspects of lipoedema.’
Dr José Luis Simarro is the founder and Medical Director of the Instituto del Lipedema y de la Mujer in Madrid, Spain, established in 2007. He has dedicated nearly two decades to the specialized diagnosis and treatment of lipedema, working with thousands of patients. His recent research contributions include a retrospective study published in Biomedicines (December 2025) analyzing clinical signs and comorbidities in 1,803 lipedema patients – one of the largest cohorts published to date – and participation as co-author in the international Delphi consensus study on lipedema diagnosis (Kruppa et al., Nature, 2025). His clinical work focuses particularly on the relationship between lipedema, intestinal permeability, connective tissue disorders, and joint hyperlaxity. He is an active member of the Lipedema World Alliance (LWA).
In his presentation he will be covering the diagnostic approach at the Instituto del Lipedema, sharing key findings from their recent Biomedicines publication regarding the prevalence of hyperlaxity, trochanteric bursitis, and intestinal permeability markers in lipedema patients, and discussing the clinical implications of these findings for diagnosis and patient management. Dr Simarro is particularly looking forward to the Q&A session – “I find these discussions with patients and clinicians incredibly valuable.
I’m really looking forward to connecting with the Lipoedema UK community. It’s always a pleasure to work with you and your team”.
